In preparation for Easter Sunday, Nintendo of America has been running a series of Nintendo Easter Eggs on their Twitter and Facebook pages. These have included everything from nifty control options in Nintendo Land to cool design choices. A recent feature about Skyward Sword was one of the latter. While a number of Skyward Sword‘s quirks and references were caught by fans almost immediately out of the gate, this specific design piece was actually pretty under the radar. In case…

YouTube member willturnbow recently uploaded a video showing off their latest creation, an animated cake decorated with scenes from Skyward Sword. The cake includes not only Skyloft above the clouds but the world beneath the clouds complete with a Sealed Temple and Faron Woods. There are little details everywhere in the pastry landscape if you look around. Near the end we are shown what was used behind the scenes to make all the little parts move on their own underneath…

Considering you probably noticed the immense amounts of red, pink, and chocolate around over the past few days, I doubt I need to point out to anyone that Valentine’s Day was just last Thursday. In light of the official “romance day” celebrated by couples everywhere, today seemed like a good day to focus on a more romantic Zelda tune than usual. Now, making assumptions about Link’s love interests is a larger can of worms than I ever want to get…

This week’s Windmill Hut is an in depth review of a YouTube gem known as thomandy. His channel is almost completely dedicated to cover songs on the piano, and a great deal of them are from the Zelda series. At the awesome quality of his performances, I find it astounding that most of his videos don’t have that many views. I believe he deserves to sit among the YouTube Zelda cover artist greats. Jump in to see why.

The land of Hyrule has long been divided into various themed regions, originally with common themes such as mountains, deserts, and lakes. However, as the series developed, more distinct and fantastic regions were added, giving players a larger amount of variety. In particular, there was the relatively recent addition of a sky realm, which has brought this region of Hyrule into the mythology of Zelda. In the early games, the land of Hyrule only consisted of the overworld and the…

Depopulating Hyrule

Ocarina of Time was my introduction to the Zelda series, so my initial reaction to the original Legend of Zelda when I first spun the Gamecube Collector’s Disc was severe discomfort. It wasn’t just that you were thrust into the overworld with little guidance and much more difficulty than more recent titles–I was ready for that. What surprised me was the lack of a safehaven, a place to call home. A natural expectation from an adventure series like Zelda is…

The folks down at farfromsubtle have recently been working on a new Minecraft creation. They’ve released videos of the creation processes of BioShock Infinite, Springfield, the Duff Brewery and Krusty Studios from The Simpsons and Moomin Village, and now they have released footage of their Sky Build. It consists of crafting several gargantuan civilizations in the sky, with Skyloft being among them. Yes, they are creating Skyloft from Skyward Sword! Make the jump to follow the team’s mission from Part…

I’ve always loved some of the central towns in the Zelda series. They help provide an anchor for Link’s quest and give the player a break from some of the more strenuous adventuring and puzzle-solving, offering new opportunities for item acquisition. The Zelda series has had some truly spectacular towns, and they’ve always helped add to the flavor of the game as a whole and to their locations. My personal favorite since I first saw it in 2003 is Windfall…

One might have expected a game called Skyward Sword, with a story that started on a floating island, to have a dense and well-developed sky world. The developers opted instead for a pared-down hub, not that dissimilar from Hyrule Field in Ocarina of Time or Termina Field in Majora’s Mask.  Those games’ fields were not particularly deep or involved.  Ocarina of Time’s, specifically, lacked enemies and even secrets were sparse.  In 1998, the joy of riding Epona from one end…

Wow, sorry for the delay on this mailbag. For whatever reason there was a lot of trouble uploading it. Also sorry for the resolution issues. Either way, this time there’s quite a few questions. There’s 15 questions in total, with roughly half being Skyward Sword related and the other half being about other aspects of the series. Enjoy! You can find the video here or click Read More to watch the embedded video. Questions and timestamps: (00:09) – Do you…
