Music is an integral part of Zelda, from the songs you can play on the various featured instruments, to the tunes you hear while dungeon-crawling, to even the upbeat melodies that often accompany the towns and settlements you come across. Many of these tracks have become synonymous with the franchise, and it’s no secret that music is one of the things we at Zelda Dungeon look forward to in each new title. But what makes a Zelda song special or endearing? Is…

If you guys are anything like me, you probably have a few playlists that consist of strictly video game music. I have three actually: Video Game Music, for just generally excellent video game tunes, Battle Jams, featuring some of the best boss battle and conflict music for when I need a little pumping up, and Night, my playlist with calming video game music. Of course, there are numerous tracks from The Legend of Zelda in every playlist, but Night is…

Hey there, Zelda fans! With Music Week reaching its conclusion, so too does the first round of our best soundtrack tournament. We’ve had some landslides and we’ve had some competitive polls as well, so let’s break down the tournament so far and get us ready for the next round. The tournament kicked off with the obligatory Zelda side game poll. As I said in that post, the bracket necessitated 20 participants, and I figured that this necessity provided a golden…

Slotted right in the latter half of the timeline, The Wind Waker contains many a musical throwback. Set upon the rolling waves of the Great Sea, leagues above the sunken remains of a once great Hyrule, the leitmotifs and references of the soundtrack give a tangible weight to the world and history of Wind Waker, as a title with… *ahem* links to the past. From the absolute outset (Island), the music of Wind Waker gently reminds you of the titles and…

One of the most important aspects of the Zelda series is its characters. Whether we’re talking about the big bad Ganondorf or the sweet and spirited Saria, these well-known characters usually have very distinctive styles and personalities. And something common to video games, especially the Zelda series, is characters having musical themes that are specific to them which accentuate their unique characteristics. These auditory queues can be indicative not just of who or what they represent, but also of their history and…

Our best soundtrack tournament continues with two new titles. As The Adventure of Link and Oracle of Seasons duke it out in yesterday’s poll, Majora’s Mask and Phantom Hourglass step into the fray. Majora’s Mask Vs. Phantom Hourglass After the groundbreaking success of Ocarina of Time, and the game’s equally groundbreaking soundtrack, the Zelda set out to develop a smaller, more intimate experience with their next game, Majora’s Mask. But the smaller scale of Link’s second adventure on the Nintendo…

The Rito of the Zelda series are an intriguing and mysterious tribe that has had only a few, limited appearances throughout the franchise. The Rito debuted in The Wind Waker in 2002, and they made their second appearance in Breath of the Wild in 2017. The years separating these two appearances demonstrate how this bird-like race and its culture evolved over time, from a group of mail carriers to an integral part of the Hyrule Kingdom. The musical theme that accompanies this tribe in both games,…

Breath of the Wild‘s soundtrack has some notable tracks that simply stand out from the rest, like “Hyrule Castle” and “The Champion’s Ballad,” and the rest of the soundtrack is largely comprised of atmospheric music that enhances the experience of exploring Hyrule. I enjoy the soundtrack as a whole, especially the town themes. Most of the town themes are nice and relaxing to listen to, and for me, my personal favorite town theme is “Rito Village,” and while both its…

Our best soundtrack tournament continues with two new titles. As A Link Between Worlds and Spirit Tracks duke it out in yesterday’s poll, The Adventure of Link and Oracle of Ages step into the fray. The Adventure of Link Vs. Oracle of Seasons To this day, The Adventure of Link stands as one of the strangest and most divisive Zelda games, bucking many of the trends established by its predecessor. Even the title’s music deviated from the Koji Kondo compositions…

There’s no question that the Legend of Zelda series has a variety of fantastic music. From the classic Overworld theme that dates all the way back to the very first game, to the new Hyrule Castle theme from Breath of the Wild. Anyone who has played the series likely has at least one track that specifically stands out to them for one reason or another. Some tracks hold a special place in a player’s heart because of some type of attachment, such as a particular…
