The Legend of Zelda has a long history of story-driven gaming, to the point where an official timeline release has been highly controversial. While in many cases this emphasis on story is praised by the gaming media, the games have attracted a fair bit of criticism for each having the same basic story – and the criticism is right. The key point here is that this is not necessarily a criticism: The Legend of Zelda ascribes very closely to a…

I think we’re at a bit of a turning point in the Zelda franchise. Nothing as major as a reinvention and it probably won’t mean any significant changes to the standard formula we’ve seen in every Zelda game, but a slightly new flavor in terms of the setting and story. I wrote a broad article about the future of Zelda in the past, but that was pre-Skyward Sword, and involved a lot of speculation and conjecture based on numerous factors…

DeviantART user, MINGLES, has recently started up a LEGO Cuusoo project for The Legend of Zelda. I’m sure I don’t need to explain to anyone what LEGO is, but Cuusoo is a section of LEGO’s website where people can submit ideas for official LEGO products, and if they gain 10,000 supporters, they will be reviewed for potential as an actual LEGO product. LEGO is a great toy for kids and even sometimes adults, and it would be incredibly cool to…

In the wake of the release of Skyward Sword, the folks at Den of Geek have deciedd to take a look back at where it all began with the first Legend of Zelda. They take a look at the inspirations behind the original game and what it in turn inspired in future games. They explain just how the original Legend of Zelda was a revolutionary game that changed the industry in its day just as Skyward Sword is changing it…

Game Informer have posted part 4 of their super replay of The Legend of Zelda. In this part of the playthrough, it focuses on level 6, which I think is the most annoying and frustrating level in the game. If you’re not sure why, ask the Wizzrobes. This video certainly proves that level 6 is hard as they spent most of it trying to complete it as opposed to flying through all the other levels. I’m currently playing The Legend…

Being a major video game series, Zelda has a lot of fan artwork and fiction created by its large fanbase, but every once in a while you see something really fantastic like this, which you can view here (thanks go to the guys at Zelda Chronicles for finding this first). This is an amazing piece of artwork illustrating an authentic map for the overworlds of both the original Legend of Zelda and its sequel Adventure of Link. It’s incredibly detailed,…

This week’s music selection comes from a group you may have heard of. It is a cover of the Dungeon theme from the original Legend of Zelda by The Advantage. The Advantage is a California based NES cover band. Find out more about them here. What do you think? What is your favorite Zelda cover?

Perhaps one of the most argued topics in Zelda timeline debates today is the Seal War, also at times referred to as the Imprisoning War. Theorists often question if what was once the story of the Seal War has become something different or altered today. Players first learned of the Seal War in A Link to the Past, but since, Nintendo has made multiple efforts in altering or changing the story. However, no title thus far has taken place during…

These days we seem to be hearing more and more talk about the Zelda series getting stale. Nintendo reusing the same structure in each game is a good example. And I don’t just mean the game in general (collect three items, plot twist, collect some more items, final showdown). I’m also talking about specific elements, such as dungeon structure. Even other elements of the series have been reused again and again. Villains, items, plot twists, kidnappings, magical objects. Some people…

So here it is, guys, the last Curiosity Shop before E3! Next week’s going to be one hell of a party, expect some big things! Until then, I’ll try to keep you satiated with some discussion videos. The questions and their timestamps are: (00:30) – You said you wanted less dungeons, but what if the dungeons were done well? (01:15) – What do you think is the hardest game in the series? (02:18) – Do you think Midna will be…
