Synthpop Tribute to the Legend of Zelda

Maybe if you’re older than me, you grew up when the Nintendo Entertainment System was the console. I mean, other consoles existed, but how could you be bad and rad without The Legend of Zelda popped into that classic grey box? And perhaps, after a tough week, that grey box was your portal to escape the drag of school and work.

This is at least true for Zac Bentz, or The Electric Witch as he’s known in his music career. Now that he’s older and can reflect on his childhood, I suspect he’s really appreciative of countless nights Castlevania or Metroid have kept him company. Even more specifically, the simplistic blips and blops of music the NES was able to produce are the focus of this album, which is essentially a short tribute to the NES’s library of music, stored on rectangle-shaped cartridges. NEScapism is a love-letter to the video games I grew up with. The games whose music meant just as much to me, if not more, as the escapism they provided my isolated imagination.

And as he goes on, the purpose of NEScapism was to capture the memories he had listening to the classic tunes, and I think he’s done an excellent job doing so, at least in a synthpop interpretation. Though I’m not a huge fan of the genre, I think the album is pretty good, and I would welcome more tracks inspired from different games. And of course, you can always buy the five track album as it is for a modest one dollar at Zac’s bandcamp.

What did you think of his music? Did you like what he was going for? Tell us in the comments!
