Strategy Guide Publisher Prima Games Shutting Down in Spring 2019
Posted on November 09 2018 by Kristen G. Rosario
At least once in our lives, most of us have all used a strategy guide to help us get through a difficult situation in a game. Being able to pick up a guide and flip through it to see how to get past the Water Temple in Ocarina of Time was amazing, for example. It was the equivalent of having somebody who 99.9% of the time would be there to help you no matter what. Nowadays, it isn’t the same with the Internet being the main source of help.
One of the biggest strategy guide publishers in the US is the newest victim of an unfortunate trend, as DK Publishing has announced they will be closing the doors to Prima Games. The company will be officially shutting their doors and stopping all operations in Spring 2019 after 28 years of service. This comes after DK has made the “extremely difficult decision” to discontinue commissioning physical guides.
This isn’t the first victim this year of online publications taking over, as both UK gaming magazines GamesTM and GamesMaster have had to close up shop as well. It is sad to see more and more physical gaming publications go away with every passing month. However it is hard to disagree with all the answers you need being on the World Wide Web.
In storage, I still own a collection of Prima Strategy Guides for the original run of Tomb Raider. The first Tomb Raider guide I have is actually in full black and white too. They have always had a place in my gaming collection and they always will. You will be missed Prima.
What do you think of this news? Do you have a fond remembrance of using a Prima Guide? Perhaps just a memory of using a physical strategy guide? Let us know in the comments below.
