One of my favorite moments in the entirety of the Zelda franchise has to be the assault on Hyrule Castle after acquiring the Master Sword in A Link to the Past. For those unfamiliar, it’s at this point in the story that Link is racing to rescue Princess Zelda from the wizard Agahnim, who intends to send her into the Dark World. It’s a great sequence to play through for sure, but what really elevates things is the score that plays as you make your way through Hyrule Castle seeking out the dark wizard. As you approach the room where the ritual will be conducted, the tune changes, and it’s here that we’re introduced to what will be known going forward in the series as “Ganon’s Theme”. It’s ominous and fits the tone of an impending showdown — one of Koji Kondo’s finest compositions for sure.

YouTube user Quatro 107 seems to have an affinity for these particular pieces as well, as he’s provided us with a clarinet cover that brings them both together in a wonderful synergy. It’s beautifully haunting and utilizes a variety of clarinets to help provide necessary gravitas and layers to these melodies. If you like what you’ve heard, be sure to give the rest of Quatro 107’s channel a look for other clarinet covers of well-known video game tracks.
