Link’s Awakening definitely has a fair share of unique quirks and oddities. Between walruses who love to dance and frogs who have their own choir, there are also multiple appearances of enemies from the Mario Bros. series. Almost every dungeon hosts a Goomba or two, and occasionally you’ll spot a Piranha Plant rising from a pipe or a ball of fire rising from the lava. Except for Eagle’s Tower, these enemies are spotted during the portions of the game where the camera shifts to a side angle, as opposed to an aerial view. Link jumps and traverses platforms much like Mario himself, and there is even an easter egg in the game in the form of a picture of Princess Peach.

After many years of dodging chain chomps in Mario games and in A Link to the Past, it was weird to adjust to them as BowWows in Link’s Awakening, where they don’t harm Link at all. Instead, the two in the game are pets to a woman named Madame MeowMeow. After rescuing one of her precious pets from the Moblin cave, Link can take the BowWow for a walk, where the barking ball and chain will defeat enemies and allow access to the next dungeon, Bottle Grotto. Etsy creator AlexOfAllArtTrades has made an adorable pin commemorating this gaming moment, depicting Link holding the chain of Madame MeowMeow’s pet with a rather worried look on his face.

The pin can be purchased for $14.64 USD here and you can check out more of the artist’s video game and pop culture-based designs here. Additionally, be sure to follow their Instagram!
