zelda_link_between_worldsIn a recent interview with the UK Official Nintendo Magazine, long-time series producer Eiji Aonuma revealed another small piece of information about the upcoming game A Link Between Worlds. After having recently discussing aspects of the game and also revealing a mysterious screenshot of a shop on Miiverse, Aounuma told ONM that an old element of the Zelda series will be changing slightly in its upcoming role in the 3DS game. Hit the jump to see the quote.

“Collecting rupees, the currency of the Zelda world, will be very important in this game. You might think that was the case with all the past games too, but I must say that this time it will be more important than ever and you will need to collect a great deal of them.”

According to ONM, Aonuma wouldn’t elaborate on exactly why collecting rupees will be significant in the game, but suggested that his statement was indeed related to the screenshot of the shop which he revealed on Miiverse. It seems unlikely that we will be getting clarification concerning this particular part of the game soon, although the full interview with Aonuma is available in issue 99 of ONM, where he talks more about A Link Between Worlds and The Wind Waker HD.

Reading Aonuma’s statement, I can’t help but be reminded of New Super Mario Bros. 2, where the idea of collecting coins was also changed, in this instance to become a central feature of gameplay. Whether rupees will take on a different role as in NSMB2 or whether they will just be deemed more important simply because they will be needed to purchase items remains to be seen.

But what do you think? How do you think the role of rupees will change in A Link Between Worlds, if at all? Do you think the mysterious shop revealed by Aonuma on Miiverse relates to this statement? Tell us in the comments below.
