zeldaWith the release of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D in 2011, a TV commercial featuring Robin Williams and his daughter Zelda was broadcast (and no matter how many times I see him in it, I can’t get used to his beard!). Zelda Williams was born on 31st July 1989 and it was thought she was named Zelda after the princess of Hyrule due to Robin being a fan of the series. However, it has turned out it wasn’t Robin’s idea to call her Zelda.

The advert for Ocarina of Time 3D states that Zelda was names after Princess Zelda and that they have been Zelda fans since 1987 despite that being 2 years before Zelda Williams was born. However, due to a recent reddit comment, it turns out it was actually Robin’s son Zachary that suggested the name:

Naming

With Zachary being born in April 1983, that would have made him a six year old at the time of his sister Zelda’s birth. It’s awfully adorable to think of a young Zelda fan lobbying for a video game name for his sister. It’s awesome that the series was an inspiration for the name of their daughter. It just goes to show how much of an affect games can have.

Would you name you child after a character from Zelda series? Are there any franchises with character’s you like the names of to the point you’d name your child after them? I’m a massive fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender and, if I ever have a daughter, I’d like to call her Katara. Let us know your thoughts and what names you’d like to use in the comments below.
