The opening area of any video game will always leave an impression on the player. I can still remember my first steps around Outset Island in The Wind Waker, as I proved my courage to receive the Hero’s Sword, explored the Forbidden Woods, and rescued Tetra, before finally leaving home on the Pirate Ship.

Listening to musician PPF’s cover of the Outset Island track brought back all of those memories. The unlikely combination of clarinet, melodica, guitar, tambourine, and recorder works surprisingly well to mimic the orchestral instrumentation of the original theme, and the arrangement stays, for the most part, true to the original as well.

PPF is also responsible for similar arrangements of the Dragon Roost Island theme, and a Stickerbush Symphony Cover (from Donkey Kong Country 2). You can find more of his work on his Youtube Channel.

What do you think of this cover? Did it bring back fond memories of your first playthrough of this game? Let us know in the comments!
