References Found in Skyward Sword

Although Skyward Sword has been receiving much praise for its amazing innovations and new approach to gameplay, a lot of the smaller details may be been inspired by things present in earlier games in the series. It is because of this the folks over at IGN have decided to take another look at the many elements present in the game and compare them to similar things found on previous Zelda games. They discovered that there are quite a few references to previous characters and situations in Skyward Sword. Including some gameplay elements and phrases heard in the very first Legend of Zelda. In this article they are going through the series one game at a time and comparing the many referenced they find from Skyward Sword. And it turns out there are a lot of references contained within this game. Warning, there are a lot of Skyward Sword spoilers within this article, so read at your own risk. “It’s a secret to everyone!” Except those who played Link’s first adventure. This line was used in Skyward Sword by the Kikwi named Yerbal who lives at the top of the Great Tree, and also by a Parella in Lake Floria. This line was originally used by the friendly Moblin who hides in various caves in the original. This moblin gives Link rupees, seemingly just wanting him to keep it a secret from his evil Moblin brethren in return.

Link’s Crimson Loftwing looks just like the bird Link uses the ocarina (or flute, as the game calls it for some reason) to call in A Link to the Past. They have the same oversized beak and general shape. The only difference is the one in ALttP is much smaller, and is white instead of red.

In the final fight of Skyward Sword there are some Bokoblins with Monster Horns that play a tune different than the other musical Bokoblins in the game. The song is the same one Link uses to call his bird in ALttP.

The great spirit, Levias, from Skyward Sword bears a strong resemblance to the Wind Fish from Awakening. Both are mystical whales with a strong tie to magical songs. They are possibly the same being.

The part in Skyward where Zelda tosses Link a magical instrument he’ll need to save the world while Impa whisks her away harkens back to the famous scene in Ocarina in which she gives link the titular instrument.

Majora’s Mask introduced bird statues that act as the only save points. These make a return in Skyward, though you can also use them as a fast transport system from Skyloft to the land below.

This one is pretty wild. Check out the picture below and you’ll notice that Skyward’s Fi and the Fairy Queen depicted in Wind Waker look almost exactly the same. Their faces, especially, are exact matches. I can’t think of any possible correlation, given Fi forever resides in the Master Sword, but their appearances are too similar to just be a coincidence. Very, very strange.

Beedle, the kooky shopkeeper, originated in Wind Waker. He still has the same theme and the same vocal cues as well. A fire dragon also still watches over the Eldin Volcano (or Death Mountain, in other words) area – a throwback to Wind Waker’s Valoo (though they admittedly look quite different).

The trials of Skyward’s Silent Realms, which tasked Link (separated from his physical body) with gathering Sacred Tears are akin to similar segments in Twilight Princess, in which Wolf Link was tasked with gathering Tears of Light.

The Fatal Blow Link can perform with his sword, introduced in Twilight Princess, makes a return in Skyward. So do his useful Double Clawshots, which are just known as Clawshots in Skyward. The region names – Faron, Eldin and Lanayru – also returned in Skyward, as did the guardian spirits of the same name (only this time they’re mystical dragons).

Both games feature segments in which you must avoid being seen by undefeatable foes (Guardians in Skyward and Phantoms in Phantom Hourglass). Both of these enemies can take Link out with one hit.

Although it is true there are a lot of references to previous games in Skyward Sword,, I did not know there really were as many. It looks like a lot of the enemies and bosses have been recreated for the latest adventure, as well as a few sequences. I know when I first saw an image of the Silent Realm and the tears of like I was immediately reminded of the twilight parts of Twilight Princess where you had to help the light spirits. And a lot of people mentioned how the guardians in the Silent Realm sequences were very similar to the phantoms in Phantom Hourglass. A couple of the other things they pointed out in this article we have heard plenty of times before. Such as the Ghirahim resembles the gilded sword or Vaati. Or that Fi copies the design of the fairy queen of Wind Waker a little too closely. A lot of these concepts might just be something that Nintendo wanted to hold onto for future games or they could be just a nod to a character seen before. Then again we might actually see some more connections drawn between them in a future sequel.

So what do you think? Do you think they have a point? Do you think much is Skyward Sword was inspired by early games in the series? Let us know in the comments below.
