Four years ago, we reported on news of a Zelda fan by the username Delmar001 working on “The Legend of Zelda Project: Hyrule Fantasy”. The goal was to recreate 1986’s The Legend of Zelda in 3D using the Unity Engine. Time passed, and we didn’t hear from Delmar for about two years between 2018 and this year. His silence was finally broken back in April, when he updated his blog, stating that after the short break he was finally ready to get back to work on the project!

It seems that last year he intended to start back up on the project after losing some of the assets due to malware on the PC he was using; luckily most of his progress was saved on his Google Drive. In his April update, he mentioned that, with a recent update to Unity, he has actually begun what is essentially another restart of the entire project. Before he was designing maps and importing them as objects, but this time around he has utilized the Unity terrain system. Furthermore, he is using the in-editor system rather than doing separate scripting. He also notes that textures from the Switch remake of Link’s Awakening and Breath of the Wild have influenced some of his terrain design and overworld philosophy.

As described in another update, he made huge progress by getting the terrain to load dynamically and getting scene changes to work by having portions of the world load as blocks adjacent to the players position; this way the entire overworld  isn’t loaded at once. Check out the video above to get a look at that! In May, he pieced together various parts of the project and managed to get them to work in tandem. The game now has a start screen, a file select screen, a HUD for the overworld with a functioning map, and an inventory screen. Character and enemy models also have animations now too. In the most recent update, Delmar showcased some screenshots of updated enemy and boss models, and the cave with the Old Man at the start of the game.

There is definitely a lot of progress that has been made recently with this Zelda I remake. To get more details head over to Delmar001’s blog or take a peek at his YouTube channel!
