Origins Of Hylia’s Name

The Legend of Zelda is full of mysteries and as we dig deeper into the fictional world within the Zelda games, we come to find out that a lot of the places and names of the series have roots from the real world. Some stuff is obvious like Zelda’s name originating from Zelda Fitzgerald and the Rupee being a real currency in certain regions of the world.

Before Skyward Sword was released we talked about how the Loft Wing was in fact designed after a real bird called a Shoebill. Birds have always seemed to be a big part of the Zelda series, especially with the latest release of Skyward Sword. When I found out that Hylia, the goddess of Hyrule, may have been named after a bird, I wasn’t too surprised. Make the jump inside to for a deeper look Hyrule’s goddesses name.

If you look up the name Hylia in google, you may find yourself looking at some pictures of birds. We have found that two different bird species share the same name as the goddess of Hyrule. The Green Hylia and the Tit Hylia.

Tit Hylia

The Tit Hylia (Pholidornis rushiae) is a species of bird in the Remizidae family. It is monotypic within the genus Pholidornis.[citation needed] It is found in Angola, Benin, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Togo, and Uganda. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.

Green Hylia

The Green Hylia (Hylia prasina) is a songbird species traditionally included in the “Old World warbler” assemblage, but probably belonging to the bush-warbler family (Cettiidae). It is the only member of its genus Hylia.
It is found in Angola, Benin, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, and Uganda. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, subtropical or tropical swamps, subtropical or tropical moist montane forests, and moist savanna.

Origins of Hylia’s name in the Zelda series could have came from anywhere and will sadly remain a mystery until Nintendo releases an official announcement letting us know the true origins of Hylia and Hyrule’s names. As I said, birds do seem to play an important role in the Zelda series, so maybe this is where it originated from. How do you feel about Hylia’s supposed origins? Do you have your own thoughts?
