There are few things in life that I love more than prog rock/metal. Bands like Tool, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, and Rush are my bread and butter and are staples in my daily Spotify playlists. If you have a song that uses experimental sounds, weird time signatures, or lasts longer than 10 minutes you absolutely have my attention. I’ve found that I listen to prog rock in a similar manner that I would orchestral music. There’s more scrutiny on my part in regard to melodies and composition which is understandable as both facets are the backbones of said genres and both have allowed for some epic crossovers and arrangements in the past. With all of that said, I’m surprised that up to this point I’ve never considered whether Zelda could get the prog treatment.

Unbeknownst to me, Ro Panuganti already had the answer to my question. Anyone who’s played Ocarina of Time knows the Battle theme very well, and how expertly it conveyed the dire straits that Link was in at any given moment when baddies were around. Ro Panuganti took this theme and made it his own, giving it a heavy prog sound that made me re-evaluate the track entirely. It still has the sinister undercurrents that we all know and love, but there’s an obvious injection of adrenaline thrown in for good measure. There are also a few Zelda tunes in the mix as well so be sure to keep your ears open for those!

If you like what you heard, be sure to give the rest of Ro Panuganti’s channel a look for some more awesome tracks.

So what do you think? Does prog metal mesh well with Zelda? Let us know in the comments below!
