According to reports, the Nintendo Direct scheduled for June — during what would have been the week of E3 — has been delayed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and Japan’s state of emergency. Nintendo has reportedly told partners, including third-party publishers scheduled to reveal games during the event, that the company “needs more development time on its first-party games” as its staff continues to adapt to working remotely.

Nintendo has yet to confirm these reports, but some outlets have speculated that the next Direct live stream will not take place until late summer. Nintendo was reportedly planning to unveil various projects in the Super Mario series during the live stream, coinciding with the franchise’s 35th anniversary. For now, we’ll just have to wait and see what Big N has in store for the rest of the year and beyond.

E3 2020 was originally scheduled to take place from June 9th to June 11th, but the event was cancelled due to coronavirus concerns. While the physical event was cancelled, we still expected Nintendo — alongside other big publishers — to host virtual events to showcase their biggest upcoming games. Nintendo’s E3 Direct live streams have traditionally taken place on the Tuesday of E3 week, so many expected this year’s showcase to take place on June 9th.
