Update: In a statement to The Verge, a Nintendo representative denied recent reports that Nintendo is exchanging old Switch models for new ones.

The representative said:

“We do not have a Nintendo Switch exchange program. We always want players to enjoy their Nintendo Switch systems, and if anything ever gets in the way of that, we encourage them to visit http://support.nintendo.com for support, or to contact our consumer support team.“

The conflicting reports indicate some kind of miscommunication between Nintendo PR and customer service. We will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.

Original: If you have considered upgrading to the newer Nintendo Switch Model that has improved battery life, an upgraded CPU, and more storage space, you may not need to break out your wallet. Nintendo will be swapping older Switch models for the newer model almost free of charge!

As reported by Polygon, a Reddit user called Nintendo’s customer service hotline out of curiosity to find out if they could exchange their old Switch model for the new one. Nintendo said that they would exchange the older model Switch for the newer model relatively free, as long as the older model Switch was purchased before July 27th of this year.

Polygon reached out to Nintendo, and they confirmed the exchange program. Nintendo told Polygon that customers must cover shipping and insurance fees and that purchases will need to be transferred to the new model using a Nintendo Switch Online account. For now, it seems this exchange program is limited to customers in the US and Canada.
