Nintendo fans this week might have received a sneak peek at what the Switch 2 Direct on April 2nd might reveal. Recent filings made with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) list several technical specifications reflecting the console’s potential power and quality-of-life features.

The first confirmation is near-field communication (NFC) and radio frequency identification (RFID) functionality in the right Joy-Con. Nintendo has not specifically confirmed amiibo compatibility, but many suspect these inclusions are enough to support an educated guess.

Charging is also different. The bottom of the console features a USB-C port for docking, and there is another on the top. Additional charging info is less clear. The Switch included a 15-volt adapter; however, there is another note concerning a 20-volt adapter. Reports suspect this refers either to USB-Cs or is representative of better charging speeds for the console while on the dock.

Many hope for the Switch 2 to demonstrate more robust graphical and processing potential, so making the dock adaptive to facilitate higher charging rates while docked could make it the ideal way to play. However, there is no way to know for certain from these documents.

For those of us hoping for Nintendo to boost its online connectivity game in its next generation, it looks like there could be some promise. The original Switch leveraged Wi-Fi 5, while the Switch 2 will support Wi-Fi 6 networks with up to 80MHz of bandwidth. The reports don’t show tests for anything beyond 2.4GHz and 5GHz ranges.

The documents also revealed the model and serial numbers.

Any suspected cuts from a technical point of view may be in an effort to make the console as affordable as possible, which has been mentioned as a high priority for Nintendo’s President, Shuntaro Furukawa.

What do you make of these details? Does it get you more excited or curious about what the Switch 2 has to offer? Let us know in comments!
