Last night, at 10:04 PM Eastern Time, a burning question in the Zelda community was finally answered.

According to a new update to the official Zelda history page on Nintendo’s Japanese website, the newest installment in the series, Echoes of Wisdom, takes place in the timeline where “The Hero is Defeated,” frequently referred to as the “Downfall,” “Decline,” or “Fallen Hero” timeline. The history page sees Echoes situated just after Tri Force Heroes and just before the “Decline of Hyrule Kingdom” that precedes the first game in the series.

Given the similarity of the Echoes of Wisdom map to that of two other Downfall games — A Link to the Past and A Link Between Worlds — it may not surprise many to see Echoes placed in the same timeline. It’s also noteworthy that, aside from games that don’t exist in Hyrule (Link’s Awakening, Oracle of Ages, Oracle of Seasons, and Tri Force Heroes), those three games with a similar map all follow each other in order on the timeline. Still, mysteries remain on what events led to the start of Echoes, and how much time may have passed after A Link Between Worlds. Given some of the lore revelations present in Echoes of Wisdom, Zelda theorists definitely still have something to chew on.

You can see the new timeline for yourself right here.

What do you think of the placement of Echoes of Wisdom in the official timeline? Are you surprised by where it landed? What burning questions about its placement do you still have? Place your thoughts in the timeline of comments down(fall) below!
