robin-y-zelda-williams-nintendo-3dsRecently, we’ve covered the petition to name an NPC in a future Zelda game after Robin Williams. The petition has gained significant momentum and as of this writing, is nearing 100,000 signatures. Yesterday, Nintendo confirmed that they are aware of the petition and issued a response to Polygon concerning the matter.

Hit the jump to find out what they had to say!

When the petition first came to be, Polygon requested that Nintendo weigh in and asked if they would comment. Yesterday, Nintendo acknowledged the campaign and had the following response for Polygon:

“Robin Williams was loved at Nintendo. Our hearts go out to his entire family, and especially to Zelda Williams who we’ve worked with multiple times.

We appreciate the outpouring of support from the gaming community, and hear the request of fans to honor him in a future game. We will not be discussing what might be possible for future games during this difficult time, but we will hold our memories of Robin close.”

The fact that Nintendo actually acknowledged and responded to the petition is great. Blizzard has opted to make a Robin Williams NPC for World of Warcraft in the near future, so it’s certainly a possibility that Nintendo would do the same. As the petition page notes, simply acquiring so many signatures in the first place is a remarkable tribute to Robin Williams and just goes to show how much he will be missed.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on this story and will update you on any news that breaks out concerning the petition!
