Game & Watch: The Legend of Zelda is soon to be released in honor of The Legend of Zelda‘s 35th anniversary. It will contain The Legend of Zelda, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, and Link’s Awakening. While this provides an interesting way to play a few classics, the device’s other functionality should not be overlooked. The “watch” in this novelty’s name comes with a few twists as well, which Nintendo details in this informative deep dive into the system’s clock and timer.

The presentation of the clock feature is themed around The Legend of Zelda, and will display different scenes from that game depending on the time of day. We can see a darkened trek through the woods, an epic morning mountain climb, and a dank dungeon crawl. Also pictured is a high-noon confrontation with Ganon. The entire game will play out over the course of a twelve-hour period, restarting after Ganon is dealt the final blow. And if Link’s adventuring tempts you to traverse Hyrule yourself, taking control is just a button press away!

Given that Game & Watch: The Legend of Zelda is intended to keep time as a desk clock, you may notice a small chime denoting a passing second. However, by holding the A button, the sound can be switched over to the game’s iconic music and effects. You can see this transition in the video below. Nintendo further teased that certain circumstances might produce unique secrets, like Fairies appearing when all numbers on the clock are identical.

Game & Watch: The Legend of Zelda also includes a countdown timer. Using Zelda II: The Adventure of Link as its thematic base, Link will combat enemies as the timer ticks away. This timer also allows the player to take control of Link to see how many of Ganon’s minions can be defeated before the countdown expires. These high-score battles can be waged in one of three environments from the game, including desert, forest, and palace.

Additionally, a time attack mode can be accessed by holding the A button while on the timer settings screen. In this mode, the player must try to defeat 21 enemies as quickly as possible. Times will be recorded to incentivize improvement, and this minigame takes place on its own unique background screen.

Nintendo goes on to explain how to use Auto-Sleep mode and the included clock stand. While it is slightly disappointing not to see a unique function for Link’s Awakening, it is understandable. The visual style in that game is significantly different from the two NES games, and it makes sense to have a unified style on a utility device like a clock.

Game & Watch: The Legend of Zelda releases on November 12th. My Nintendo members who purchase Game & Watch: The Legend of Zelda will also earn 300 My Nintendo Platinum Points.
