Reggie Fils-Aimé, the well-known face of Nintendo in North America, is retiring. Announced in a press release by Nintendo and then confirmed in an official message from Reggie on Nintendo’s Twitter (embedded above), the long-time Nintendo of America president will be leaving his position on April 15th, 2019.

Reggie, who has been with Nintendo for 15 years, released a statement through Nintendo’s PR saying: “Nintendo owns a part of my heart forever. It’s a part that is filled with gratitude — for the incredibly talented people I’ve worked with, for the opportunity to represent such a wonderful brand, and most of all, to feel like a member of the world’s most positive and enduring gamer community. As I look forward to departing in both good health and good humor, this is not ‘game over’ for me, but instead ‘leveling up’ to more time with my wife, family and friends.”

Doug Bowser, who currently serves as the head of sales and marketing at Nintendo of America, will replace Fils-Aimé as president. In a statement, Bowser asserts that fans should “rest assured, we will continue to build on his work to evolve and expand our brand, furthering Nintendo’s global mission of creating smiles. There are millions more of those to come.”

As part of the announcement, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa had this to say: “I really appreciate everything Reggie has done for Nintendo.” He continued, “Inside and outside our company, Reggie is known as an exceptional leader. We are grateful that he is leaving the business in good shape with strong momentum. While we will miss him and we wish him the very best in his retirement, we are also pleased to have such an able successor ready to step into that role. Doug Bowser and the rest of the team will ensure a seamless transition and continued momentum for Nintendo.”

Joining Nintendo in 2003 and assuming the role of Nintendo of America’s president in 2006, Reggie Fils-Aimé — or “The Regginator” — has become one of the biggest names in the gaming industry. Growing to prominence throughout the GameCube and Wii console cycles, Fils-Aime helped to usher in some of Nintendo’s most successful years, and for an entire generation of gamers, he has been seen as one of the most prominent public faces for the company. The entire Zelda Dungeon would like to express our thanks to Reggie for all he’s done and wish him well for the future.
