Earlier today, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) announced that this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo would be cancelled due to concerns over the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19). With the news still reverberating within the games industry, Nintendo has issued an official statement in regards to E3’s cancellation, voicing support of the ESA’s decision and hinting at the company’s future plans.

A Nintendo spokesperson offered the following statement:

“Nintendo supports the ESA’s decision to cancel this year’s E3 to help protect the health and safety of everyone in our industry–our fans, our employees, our exhibitors and our longtime E3 partners. We would like to express our concern and support for all those affected by the COVID-19 outbreak during this challenging time.

“We”ll continue to be flexible and redirect our efforts to other ways of keeping our fans up to date about our activities and products. Because of the COVID-19 outbreak, large industry events may be untenable for the foreseeable future. But we are considering various ways to engage with our fans and will have more to share as the year continues.”

This statement does not address specific plans for a Nintendo Direct or Treehouse live streams during the week for which E3 2020 was previously scheduled, but it seems likely that either of these Nintendo traditions are being considered.

How would you like to see Nintendo make up for E3’s cancellation? Do you still want a big Nintendo Direct or Treehouse live streams? Let us know in the comments below.
