During a Q and A session, Mr. Iwata stated pretty openly that they are looking at making the NX system become region free. This is huge news for all fans of Nintendo, but especially for Zelda fans. With Nintendo deciding to expand their IPs even more, there is a high chance of more Zelda side games, including ones that aren’t released word wide such as the Tingle series. With a region free system, that would allow gamers to import those games if they really want to play it without having to also buy a second system for that specific region. You can also see how this is a huge benefit to gamers in countries who want to play Zelda games, but it’s very expensive or very hard to get their hands on a Nintendo system.

“Removing region-locking from current game machines presents various issues, so we don’t consider that to be very realistic. However, regarding NX, given the customer feedback and proposals from the market, while nothing has been decided yet, we’re currently investigating internally what problems there would be in realizing it. You can think of that as the current situation. I understand your desire, so I’d like to look at it optimistically going forward.”

We can only hope this ends up happening. Nintendo has talked about going region free in the past, so hopefully they take this request seriously before they release the new hardware.
