Its new trailer at E3 revealed to us many new details about Breath of the Wild 2. And with more information to speculate on, some fans have begun to draw parallels between Breath of the Wild 2 and Majora’s Mask.

On the surface, these two games share some notable features. Both are a follow-up to a massively successful Zelda title (Breath of the Wild and Ocarina of Time, respectively). Both also use assets from and take a darker tone than their respective predecessor. Some fans even speculate that Breath of the Wild 2 will feature reverse time mechanics, an addition similar to the three-day cycle of Majora’s Mask.

Bill Trinen of Nintendo Treehouse spoke to IGN on these comparisons, and while he acknowledged why they may be made, he asserts the games are not related anymore than this surface level:

“I would say it’s an easy comparison or conclusion to jump to at this point in time, just given what’s been shown so far and given the nature of it being a direct sequel… So I understand people making that conclusion, but at the same time – and I don’t want to delve too much into it – but this is its own game.”

Trinen continues, highlighting how little we have seen of the game so far. While such speculation is understandable given what we have seen so far, Trinen insists Breath of the Wild 2 will take its own shape as fans meet with it in greater detail:

“I think as we start to show a bit more of the game over the coming months to the next year or so, it’ll probably start to be a bit more apparent where this game stands on its own and what makes it so unique…”

Only two trailers have been released so far, and based on Trienen’s comments, there is much more to the game than what these teasers hold:

“…the way that [this sequel] builds on Breath of the Wild, which already was such an expansive game with so many layers of Link’s abilities and layers to the gameplay… I think this is going to layer quite a bit more into that.”

Trinen did not explain what layers will be added onto the sequel, but he is adamant that fans will understand Breath of the Wild 2 as its own standalone game:

“By the time you finish playing it, I think everybody is probably going to come to the conclusion that this is really its own thing.”

What layers will this sequel add to its immersive predecessor? What will make it stand out as its own game? Let us know what you are hoping for in the comments bellow.
