Sakurai’s recent Smash-oriented Nintendo Direct brought us a ton of Zelda news, the most important of which was probably Midna’s reveal as an assist trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS!
So far, all of the footage we’ve seen was from the
Wii U version of the game, and this is our first exclusive look at her on the 3DS.
Sakurai’s most recent “Pic of the Day” showcases Midna on the 3DS, and gives us a little more info on how she’ll work:
Pic of the day. The Assist Trophy, Midna! This is the 3DS version. She’s going to grab and throw things all over the place. Her uncontrollable, whimsical nature remains intact.
This seems to serve as confirmation that she’ll function the exact same way she does in the Wii U version (footage found here), damaging others by grabbing and launching them across the air with her ponytail. In the original reveal trailer, the throw seems to incapacitate the player for a few seconds, but nothing has been confirmed. I am left wondering if Midna is capable of throwing anything other than playable characters; I don’t think she’ll grab items or other objects, but Sakurai’s statement seems to at least hint at it.
