Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate Limitations: No Online for 3DS, No File Transfer from Tri to 3U

To any rabid Monster Hunter fan, the recent announcement of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate was sure to delight to no end. I personally had been hoping for a Monster Hunter 4 stateside release, but I guess there’s still hope for that for the future, and we have to take what we’re given with a smile on our face. Having played Tri on the Wii, I’m excited to see what it would look like in a much higher definition, and there’s enough added content and monsters for me to justify buying Ultimate when it comes out.
Up until now I wasn’t sure which version of the game I would get. Getting both the Wii U and 3DS versions would be awesome, but not very realistic for me, at least not at once. Some new information about the 3DS’s MH3U capabilities has thrown a new factor into my decision making though. According to Capcom, the 3DS version of the game will not feature online multiplayer capabilities. That being said, it probably will make use of Streetpass and Spotpass, so those are two 3DS exclusive perks, allowing you to interact with other hunters in a unique way. However, no online for 3DS is a huge bummer, and makes me lean more towards the Wii U version as the one that I want.
For the Wii U online play though, the game will now be run on Nintendo’s own servers, rather than a 3rd part server (Tri currently uses a company called KDDI). This means that hopefully online quality will only improve.
For those of you who are thinking about transferring your data from Tri to 3U, there’s more bad news for you. Capcom has announced that they have no current plans to allow data transfer from the Wii game to either of its sequels-of-sorts. While they didn’t give an official reason, it could have something to do with the large amount of cheating that evidently goes on in Tri. Let’s hope that trend doesn’t carry over to the new system.
For those who plan on picking up a copy of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, are you going to get the Wii U or 3DS version, and why? If you want to get both (as I do eventually), which do you think you will end up playing more? If I had both, I might would use my Wii U for online play only, while sticking to my 3DS for when I want to play by myself. Sound off in the comments to let us know what you think.
