Clyde, known more commonly as Tomato/mato, recently livestreamed a complete playthrough of the first quest in a prototype version of The Legend of Zelda (NES). The purpose of the stream was to capture screenshots for a book he is helping create. While we won’t embed every single video from the stream (you can find them all on his YouTube channel), we will embed his Level 9 video since it seems to show off the most changes from Level 9 in the final game during the first quest. We encourage you to check out other runs he does over on his Twitch channel.

What’s neat about this run is who Clyde is and what he’s previously done. While most Nintendo fans may recognize him as one of the people behind the Mother 3 fan translation, he’s actually done a number of professional translations, as well, for well-known series like One Piece and Attack on Titan. Because of his background, he can actually translate text live as he plays. For this reason, you’ll definitely want to give this playthrough a look-see if you’re interested in text changes between translations. Do you folks have any experience with prototype versions of Zelda games?
