“A Long, Long Time Ago…”

The Minish Cap is one The Legend of Zelda‘s most underrated gems. This brilliant Game Boy Advance adventure feels like a fitting successor to games like Link’s Awakening and A Link to The Past. One thing that makes the game so great is its stellar music, which is excellent despite the technological limitations of its platform.

This rearrangement of “Story” by The Synthetic Orchestra is a great example of Minish Cap‘s underrated score. This quiet song opens the game, playing alongside the stain glass windows that retell the legend of the Picori Sword. These is the first sounds the player hears, and they set the stage for Link’s epic adventure.

As you can tell, this cover uses a synthetic orchestra to enhance the song far beyond what was possible on the Game Boy Advance. In this rearrangement, Synthetic Orchestra captures the sense of mystery and beauty that so many of us associate with myths and legends. The use of synthetic strings and horns adds gravitas to the moment, hammering in the importance of the moment. Overall, the arrangement might be simple, but it captures the beautiful spirit of the original song perfectly!
