The recent Nintendo Treehouse livestream of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity featured an exciting assortment of news for the upcoming game. One segment of particular interest was a training mission where Link spars with the Goron Champion Daruk in none other than Lon Lon Ranch, which has been returned to its pre-Calamity state.

The mission began with the selection of the Iron Sledgehammer for Link — an item which also appears in Breath of the Wild — as a means of training for the use of two-handed swords. Additionally, they modeled the player’s ability to customize outfits, in this case removing the upper-body armor and leaving Link shirtless for his training workout, eliciting some jokes and laughter from the Treehouse hosts.

Link practices his two-handed weapon combat skills as he moves about the ranch, crossing the fabled racetrack, dodging around fences, and fighting a battalion of Hyrule’s soldiers. In addition to the Iron Sledgehammer, Link also uses the Lightening Rod and Stasis, carefully timing his attacks to drain the weak-point gauge of stronger enemies, like the Hylian Captain. He also periodically eats to raise his attack and defense stats.

The greatest challenge of this training mission comes at the end, however. As Link fights through waves of Hylian soldiers, Daruk approaches from the distance, ready to test the hero. For such a big guy, Daruk can navigate around his opponent with ease and even attempts to hurl magma rocks at Link during the fight! Once the player overcomes his attacks and drains his health meter, the training mission appears to end.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is set to be released on November 20, 2020.
