There are a number of beverages that are cherished and inherently tied to the winter season: Eggnog, Pumpkin Spice Lattes, Hot Buttered Rum, Mulled Wine. But there’s none so universally beloved as the classic Hot Chocolate. It’s appropriate for all ages, it’s simple, and it can be prepared in so many different ways. This season, I’ve actually been personally experimenting with how to up my hot chocolate game, going as far as to try out Parisian Hot Chocolate. That didn’t exactly go quite well, but thankfully for me, I had a bit more luck with a Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild-inspired recipe from YouTube craftsman Donovan of Once Upon a Workbench.

We previously featured the incredible Breath of the Wild-inspired playhouse Donovan made for his son, and now the clever tinkerer has moved his way into the kitchen for a concoction that’s a bit easier to recreate. Early on, Donovan notes that there is no recipe for hot chocolate within Breath of the Wild, so he instead aimed to make a recipe in the vein of its logic, using a multitude of ingredients, including goat’s milk, honey, anise pods, and ancho chili powder.

The ingredients weren’t too hard to find at my local grocery store save for the anise pods, which took some searching, but it is well worth the effort. This hot chocolate tastes like absolute heaven and wasn’t really that hard to make once I had everything. Donovan warns at the start that this recipe will ruin you from ever wanting regular hot chocolate again, and I will echo that sentiment. I’m not entirely sure what I’m going to do with all the instant hot chocolate packets in my cupboard now.

You can check out the recipe right here in the YouTube description, as well as check out Once Upon a Workbench’s channel right here!
