Hyrule Warriors, a cross pollination of Koei Tecmo’s Dynasty Warriors and Nintendo’s Zelda, may come as a disappointment for those looking for the newest puzzle-solving Zelda experience. While Hyrule Warriors may look like a Zelda game, it is a fast-paced battlefield strategy game at its core. The game does not include any of the traditional elements, except characters, found in canon Zelda titles.

Kotaku states that, “If you like Zelda and Dynasty Warriors, this game is for you. If you like Dynasty Warriors, this game is for you. If you like Zelda but dislike (or have never played) Dynasty Warriors, you may want to avoid this game. When it comes down to it, Hyrule Warriors is Dynasty Warriors with a Zelda coat of paint and nothing more.”

Kotaku goes on to review some key elements of Hyrule Warriors. In short, there are plenty of dynamic battles, fun challenges (in Dynasty Warriors fashion, with an NES Zelda look), leveling action, and some fun shout-outs to the lore of Zelda. Unfortunately, there are a couple issues, too. Kotaku reports that the game doesn’t feature nearly as many modes as other Dynasty Warriors games, with no online multiplayer — or any online features — at all.

Perhaps notable of all, is that the reporter experienced some annoying issues with the enemies on-screen. According to Kotaku, the Wii U does not render large amounts of entities on the screen, leaving some enemies invisible and invincible.

“There is one area where the Wii U hardware fails to keep up: the number of enemies shown on screen. Nothing is more annoying than wading through a group of enemies—advancing slowly so as to kill them all in one pass—only to turn around and see dozens that were somehow missed. This happens whenever there are too many enemies in an area to all fit on the screen; so the game simply does not show them nor allow you to kill them.”

Does Hyrule Warriors’ action-packed combat make up for the lack of multiplayer and disappearing enemies? Do you consider this to be on equal level to other Zelda titles? Or is Dynasty Warriors just wearing Zelda clothing for the benefit of Nintendo? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
