Japanese News Network Dubs Breath of the Wild the Best Game of All Time, Shigeru Miyamoto Responds

The Zelda series is no stranger to the highest pantheons of gaming’s elite. Games like The Legend of Zelda, A Link to the Past, and Ocarina of Time have frequently appeared at or near the top of rankings cataloguing the medium’s greatest titles. Since its release, Breath of the Wild has been another critical darling, receiving overwhelming acclaim and being held in the same lofty regard as its predecessors. It seems that the the accolades will continue to pile up for Breath of the Wild, as Japanese News Network TV Asahi has named it the best game of all time.
TV Asahi is the flagship station of the All-Nippon News Network. During what they refer to as the “Video Game General Election,” the station collected over 50,000 votes from viewers, developing a top 100 list of the best video games ever. Breath of the Wild stands atop the entire list at the number one spot, but is the only representative of the Zelda franchise in the top ten. Expectedly, quite a few other Zelda titles appear further down the full list. The highest ranked games tend to skew a tad modern, and the list as a whole skews heavily toward Nintendo. Even games like Chrono Trigger or Dragon Quest III, while not Nintendo properties, are often associated with the Nintendo system of their era.
The Legend of Zelda creator, director, and producer Shigeru Miyamoto certainly noticed this Nintendo representation. He later tweeted his thanks to the voters for getting so many classic Nintendo games to make the list. Always the innovator, Miyamoto went on to say that Nintendo will continue to create new experiences for everyone to enjoy.
“This is Miyamoto. Thank you for voting for many Nintendo titles in the “Video Game General Election” that aired last night. It was also an opportunity to recall each scene of game development that has been repeated for nearly 40 years. We will continue to create video games that will bring new experiences to everyone.”
