Remember playing old Nintendo 64 games like Banjo-Kazooie and Super Mario 64? Back when the video games coming out seemed to be based on just having a great time? Well, that ’90s charm is what this independent game company is trying to capture in their new project, A Hat in Time.

Hit the jump to get the details.

As you can see from the video, the game gets several ideas from older Legend of Zelda titles, along with other retro games. First, there’s the hookshot, which seems to be a lot like the grappling hook from The Wind Waker. They also have an umbrella that performs various abilities, à la Banjo-Kazooie, wall-jumping, and a ground-pound, similar to Super Mario 64.

To me the project looks like a spectacular effort to catch the magic of a by-gone era of gaming. Another point is that the ‘collect-a-thon’ genre is slowly fading, and a new, high-quality game to revive it is a great idea. It might just be the kick-off it needs.

Currently the project has reached the goal it set for donations, but they’re still offering some rewards to supporters in return. What do you think about the idea? Will you be supporting them, financially or socially? Think it’s a good idea or a bad one? Let us know in the comments!
