Incredibly fake Zelda Wii U rumor

With the release dates of both A Link Between Worlds and The Wind Waker HD, fans of the Zelda series are becoming more and more excited about the possibility that a concrete announcement of the the next Zelda game for Wii U will be released to the public soon.  The anticipation of this announcement is so high, in fact, that one German gaming website decided to post a deliberately fake “leak” of information on Nintendo’s upcoming title, to find out whether it would be interpreted as true or not.  Since it is is interesting to consider the possibility of an actual Legend of Zelda game incorporating different gameplay and story elements anyway, we’ll report on this “news” story for the purpose of community discussion.  Get ready, because what you are about to hear is probably like no Zelda Wii U that you’ve considered before!

First off, it needs to be made clear that this entire article was written by Polygamia, a German website.  That being said, I confess that I am not an expert at German, although I have taken several years of the language in school, and therefore, there may be considerable details “lost in translation.”

The article begins by stating that Nintendo wants this new Zelda game to be revolutionary.  We already have an idea that that is a goal of Aonuma and his team, as he has stated in a Nintendo Direct earlier this year that they will be rethinking gameplay mechanics that have come to be a standard for the Zelda series, such as linearity and online connectivity.  The article then continues to say that the Zelda team wants to take the series back to the original concept by Shigeru Miyamoto, who remarked that his imagination and discovery of new areas in nature as a child was the inspiration for the 1986 NES game.  The author writes that, given these goals, the development team decides to throw out all old ideas and come up with a recreation of Miyamoto’s experiences when he was younger.  The article states that the upcoming Wii U Zelda game will be set in the “real world.”

Not only does the author write that the new Zelda game will be set in the real world, he also goes on to state that Link will carry around a smartphone and will fight the imaginary manifestations of villains and enemies that are developing in his mind.  He walks down a busy suburban street, instead of through a forest, and dungeons are completely different;  rather than castles and forests, they are replaced with universities, schools, cornfields, and big cities.  The author goes on to hint at the story, insinuating that Princess Zelda is simply a kind girl who helps Link become acclimated to his life in a new town.  All of this sounds very interesting, and leads one to wonder, how is Ganon represented?

Alright, rather than ramble on about the differences between “real” Zelda games and that which was written as a fake news post, I urge you to check this article out for yourselves; it is translated by Google, so, even though the automatic translation is horrible, you will be able to read it if you don’t understand German.

I think that this is a very interesting article, and that it presents ideas which may actually make a solid game.  However, I’m not sold on this being a good direction for the Legend of Zelda series to ever take;  I am a fan of Nintendo’s treasured franchise to stay medieval, thank you very much. The whole idea of Link carrying around a smartphone is laughable, but is an interesting representation of his bag of items in modern times.  I just hope that this whole idea stays in the “never realized” category of Zelda ideas.
