Today’s Nintendo Direct highlighting the Switch 2 was a treat for everyone, especially Zelda fans. Not only were we treated to updated Switch 2 versions of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, but Nintendo announced a brand-new Hyrule Warriors game, entitled Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment.

The game is another collaboration between Koei Tecmo and Nintendo, taking us back in time to when Princess Zelda was transported to an older Hyrule, where she met Queen Sonia and King Rauru. We all know the story of Tears of the Kingdom, but now we will see the story of what happened leading up to the events of Tears of the Kingdom. Players will get to experience the thrilling battles of The Imprisoning War first-hand when the game launches exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 later this winter.

Nintendo’s press site provided the following description of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment:

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is the newest title in the Hyrule Warriors series and is developed by Koei-Tecmo Games with support from Nintendo. The game features epic battles against hordes of enemies as it tells the untold story from Hyrule’s distant past of the Imprisoning War that ultimately led to the events of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Fans of the Legend of Zelda series and players of both The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom can experience the thrill of battle and this canonical tale featuring Princess Zelda, King Rauru, and other familiar characters. Fight for Hyrule’s future when Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment comes to Nintendo Switch 2 this winter.

The trailer shows off a few playable characters including Rauru, Mineru, and Princess Zelda. This is speculation, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we also get to play as Queen Sonia and the Champions of old as well. The past games have boasted an extensive roster of characters, and I’m sure as we get closer to the release date we’ll see more playable characters revealed. If this game is anything like the first Hyrule Warriors game, maybe we will even get to play a story from Ganondorf’s point of view? One can only hope!

I personally have loved every Hyrule Warriors game that Koei Tecmo and Nintendo have collaborated on. The hack-‘n-slash style of gameplay might not be for everyone, but the stories that Hyrule Warriors have told have been top-notch in my opinion. I’ve always wondered about what went on behind the scenes with Zelda during Tears of the Kingdom, and I’m excited to have more of that story told.

What are your thoughts? Are you excited for another Hyrule Warriors game? What are your thoughts on The Imprisoning War? Let us know in the comments below. And follow along with Zelda Dungeon as we continue to report on news of the Switch 2, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, and more!
