Nintendo has announced the release date for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity‘s first wave of DLC, titled Pulse of the Ancients. This wave will feature a new difficulty level called “Apocalyptic,” added weapon types, challenging enemies, and an expanded roster, including the new playable Battle-Tested Guardian! Now let’s dive into what we saw during the trailer revealed at E3 2021!

The new gameplay trailer features the Battle-Tested Guardian as a playable character, a new weapon for Link, larger and more difficult mini-boss characters, and the inclusion of the Master Cycle Zero. Link’s new weapon appears to be based upon Guardian arms — or even Terrako’s arms — and is very reminiscent of the Gauntlets from the original Hyrule Warriors game. Link is shown wielding the two-handed weapon and propelling himself forward into hoards of enemies, and we get to see his special move as well.

An ancient and formidable Guardian has been revealed as a new playable character! Named “Battle-Tested Guardian,” this ancient foe will charge its way into hoards of enemies. We get to see its signature eye beam pulse take out a hoard of Bokoblins, and only time will tell what other moves will be added. Personally, I was not expecting a Guardian to be a playable character, but it’s an awesome addition considering that the title of the DLC is Pulse of the Ancients. I’m excited to see how destructive the Guardian character can be. The gameplay video also shows that mini-bosses like Moblins and ChuChus are getting a considerable difficultly upgrade. Moblins will be able to throw bomb barrels, for example, which will add a new element of difficulty to the game.

As a final reveal for the trailer, we see Princess Zelda ride in on the Master Cycle Zero, which will no doubt be an additional weapon for her, since in the base game she primarily uses the Shiekah Slate when she is not in her Goddess garb. The Master Cycle Zero made its debut in the first Breath of the Wild game as an unlockable once Link finishes The Champions’ Ballad DLC. We didn’t get to see any gameplay with the Master Cycle Zero, but we don’t have too much longer to wait until we can ride across the fields of Hyrule once again!

The entire Age of Calamity Expansion Pass is available for preorder right now at $19.99 USD and will garner you access to two waves of DLC, with the first wave due to release this Friday, June 18th. The second wave, titled: Guardian of Remembrance, will release later this year in November, and will bring new character vignettes, added stages, an expanded roster, and new battle skills for existing characters.
