350px-PZelda3IronNow THIS is an odd sight to behold. Steam Greenlight, a system on Valve’s entertainment platform Steam, lets the gaming community help with the release of new games created by independent developers. Now, though other companies have sold games on Steam that previously released on Nintendo platforms, Nintendo has never made an effort to sell their games directly through Steam. This fact makes it all the more ridiculous to see Hyrule: Total War, a fan-made mod of Medieval 2: Total War, show up on Greenlight. This can only end in tears. …and likely a big, fat Cease & Desist.

Check out a video on the matter by Jim Sterling after the jump.

Update: The game has been removed from Steam Greenlight. Hurray!

One thing I can’t get over is that the game was submitted to Greenlight by someone called WolfDampf, who had nothing to do with the creation of Hyrule: Total War. That kind of thing irritates me, as Nintendo could end up bringing the hammer down on the game not only as a Steam Greenlight submission, but as a game in general. Because of this, they could stop the currently free distribution of Hyrule: Total War outright if they wanted to, and it would be the fault of somebody who did not even make the game. In fact, Sega could even attack this, since they are Medieval 2‘s publisher.

Either way, that would be a real same, as Chasen Lindsey, the mod’s creator, has created something incredible here. HTW has loads of great content, and things like this seem exploitative on the Greenlight submitter’s part, and only make things harder for the original creator. I sure hope that Nintendo just sees this and says they want it removed and nothing more, for Chasen’s sake.

What do you guys think? If something like this were actually allowed, would you like to see Hyrule: Total War on Steam? What do you think Nintendo’s reaction to this might be, if the mod gets ahead on Greenlight? Drop a comment.
