Names have always been an important part of any game especially in the Zelda series. A lot of the names are reused several times or contain a strong meaning relating to something in the game. Zelda, Link, and Impa are names we hear quite often when playing or even talking about the Zelda series, but where did they originate from and what exactly is the meaning behind them?

With the recent release of the new Hyrule Historia book, a lot of new, old, and unknown information was released. In just the preface of the book we can find out how some of the more important names of the series came to be and the meaning behind them. To find out for yourself be sure to keep reading after the jump.

When creating The Legend of Zelda Miyamoto knew he wanted the series to be named “Legend of ______”, but didn’t know who the legend would be about. He later chose the name of Zelda Fitzgerald, since she was known for her beauty. The name Link came from not only being a “link” to the players, but also the character is meant to link energy throughout the world and transcend time. Finally, we learn that Impa’s name comes from the word impart which describes a lot of characteristics of her role in the Zelda games.

We already knew a little about the names of the Zelda series, but it’s always nice to have the meanings actually written on ink as fact. Miyamoto along with Nintendo always come up with clever names for characters in the Zelda series that not only sound good, but have a deeper meaning than the average. So what do you guys think? Did this book shed some light on any of your unanswered questions about the origins of the names or did you already know what was mentioned? Leave us your thoughts in the comments below.
