The first dungeon in a Zelda game is so vital to not only Link’s journey, but the player’s as well. It gives the player an understanding of what to expect from the remaining dungeons in a given title. And while the first dungeon should be kind of like a tutorial, it should also feel like a true adventure inside the dungeon’s depths. In the most recent entry of our Hyrule Compendium series, Gooey and Mases discuss one such first dungeon, the Forest Temple from Twilight Princess.

Their discussion tackles everything that makes this Forest Temple work so well. Topics include the characters, the atmosphere, the way the enemies match the aesthetic of the temple, and more. Not everybody will agree that the Forest Temple is one of the great first dungeons, but it’s hard to argue that this dungeon wasn’t memorable.

What do you think is a really good first Zelda dungeon? Do you think the Forest Temple from Twilight Princess is a solid first dungeon? Let us know in the comments below!
