Later this month, Majora’s Mask will turn 20 years old. And although our upcoming celebrations will include the Nintendo 64 version, our latest Hyrule Compendium video is devoted to Majora’s Mask 3D — with a few comparisons to the original game, of course. Mases and Goo dive into discussion, and both weigh in on whether this is the greatest remake of a Zelda game. Give the video a watch to find out whether they both agree!

With the question at hand, I’d have to answer with a no. For the most part, all the changes in the remake are fine, but I do have a few nitpicks. To start, I preferred all the original boss battles — giving every boss an eyeball as a weak spot was unnecessary. Continuing from that, I really disliked the updated Twinmold fight, it feels ruined to me. My final criticism also extends to Ocarina of Time 3D; while the graphics are improved, the lighting is too bright. So aside from wanting to play Majora’s Mask on a television, my argument in favor of the original, is that it’s lighting better reflects the darker themes of this game, which consists of death and a sense of hopelessness.

Do you think Majora’s Mask 3D is the best remake of a Zelda game? If not, which remake would you consider the greatest? At the very least, can we all agree that the Moon in Majora’s Mask 3D looks goofy? Sound off in the comments below!
