2000px-Netflix_logo.svgNetflix wowed many gamers recently with their announcement of a live-action Legend of Zelda series on their popular streaming provider. Many are hugely excited, while others are hesitant to have faith in it. Many questions come up about what the do’s and don’t’s of a TV series would be, but one that some fans wonder about is whether the whole thing should be canonical in the overarching timeline. Should the upcoming show fit into Nintendo’s established canon?

netflix-live-action-zeldaAfter Hyrule Warriors came out, an old argument of canon reared its head. Before Hyrule Historia’s official timeline, many argued about not only which games went where on the timeline, but which ones belonged on it at all. Now, we once again have to wait for Nintendo to voice their opinions on the matter.

With the Netflix series coming out, we first have to think about what it could be about. It could be a retelling of a story from an already existing game, in which case, it would obviously be canonical, but hopefully, they decide to make a whole new story of their own, giving us original content based on, but not directly copying, the usual Zelda content. In this case, certain factors dictate whether most people will accept it as a canonical series. There is the obvious view of the series’ quality – if it sucks, many will say it is not official – but that is a rather unsubstantiated argument. Other things are more important. Does the series directly interfere with the chronological events of the games? Does it actually give backstory to, or reveal the events following, a series game? Does the show feature enough series-relavent characters, locations and themes from Zelda to be counted as a Zelda installment itself? Does the fact that it is not even a game automatically dismiss it from the canon? These are mostly opinionated questions, but until Nintendo opens up about the show, we’ll have to banter here on the web in the mean time, and that’s where you come in!

Though the TV series is not out yet, that doesn’t stop us fans from throwing theories left and right. Do you think the series will be made canonical? Once it does release, what kind of content do you expect, and will said content allow it to fit into the official series canon? Drop some comments below!
