SS Link and Zelda 2All through The Legend of Zelda series we are shown these two characters that time and time again seem to find themselves thrust together in one perilous journey after another. They cross paths over and over, whether they are descendents or reincarnations, Link and Zelda seem to always have their fates intertwined. There is always great peril and danger that surrounds them, and it would seem as if through the main series one cannot live without the other. There is clearly an energy, a force larger than either one of them that continues to bring them back together time and time again. Call me a sap, but that sounds to me like soul mates! You can tell that there is something more between them then the simple need to help save the world, they have fallen in love and their fates are now forever linked — pardon the pun! But do you need this never-ending love affair to appear in all the games, or is the Zelda series just as good without they undying love shared between them? Without this love could the Kingdom of Hyrule, and all that has transpired have ever even happened? Follow along past the break to join in on the discussion.

Each one of us Zelda fans has a game that is our favorite, and for some of you that might be a game that has nothing to do with Link and Zelda at all; but could this amazing franchise have continued for so long without their love affair? Over and over Link risks all to save those that he loves, whether it be his sister, Aryll or Zelda herself, is love not really the only reason that you would put your life on the line to save others? Even if you choose to sacrifice yourself because of a sense of duty and honor, is that not just another form of love for your own values and beliefs?

holding_hands__default-news-imageCould the rich history and lore that surrounds the Zelda franchise have continued without these two characters? In the majority of the titles within the series Link follows the path of the hero and saves the damsel in distress; but is this something that we need in every title, for the franchise to continue for another thirty years? Maybe Im a sucker, but the danger, sacrifice, and desire that guides Link throughout his adventures is what keeps me coming back every time. Not that I don’t enjoy the titles that don’t center around the pair as well, but the ones that truly speak to my heart, focus on possibly the two most tortured souls in video game history, I was literally screaming at the end of Ocarina of Time when Zelda lets Link go back to his child form, after all they had been through, why throw it all away and start all over!

Maybe I am being a sap, but I believe that their love affair is truly what has held the franchise together for so long. What about you? Could there have been a Legend of Zelda without them? Do you need to see Link and Zelda carry out their tortured love affair in every game? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below.
