Music to me is one of the most incredible creations of humanity. As a former web DJ, my life has at times revolved around music and understanding it and appreciating it. One of my most common go-tos while working in radio was video game OST’s. My collection is immense, taking up nearly over 400 GB of space on my external hard drive. Suffice to say, I really enjoy video game music. So I am always interested when a massive re-imagining of a favorite OST of mine is getting released. One of my favorites remains Theophany’s Time’s End album from 2012 (which actually got a physical release a year ago.) A new album has come along to take a place in my heart though: Sunrise & Moonfall, put together by Pixel Mixers.

Sunrise & Moonfall is a fascinating experience to listen to. A tribute album to both Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask, the album clocks out at nearly four hours long. Over the course of that runtime, the listener is treated to music from 98 different musical artists. These artists run the gamut in terms of style, featuring everything from traditional orchestral pieces, hard metal slam works, smooth jazz suites, and even 80’s-style synthwave and polka. Listening from start to finish, you never entirely know what you might be treated to next. Of note, I was caught incredibly off guard by the sudden transition of the title theme from Majora’s Mask being played in a traditional bard-ballad style to a rendition of “Majora’s Theme” done like a track straight out of Cyberpunk 2077.

To this end, Sunrise & Moonfall serves more as a massive collection of incredibly well-done covers than it does a proper album in many regards. I wouldn’t dare dream of shuffling the aforementioned Time’s End given its narrative rolling structure, but Sunrise & Moonfall is a great album to just stick on while you hang around the house if you’re really feeling like some musical nostalgia. Every song I have heard so far is fantastic even if they don’t exactly flow into one another particularly well. Best of all, the album is entirely free and the first part is uploaded in its entirety on YouTube.

You can find the download for all four parts of Sunrise & Moonfall right here on the album’s YouTube page, and you can also check out even more free albums on Pixel Mixer’s website!
