With all the hype around A Link Between Worlds within the Zelda community, the new 3DS Zelda title that’s had heavy influence from A Link to the Past, Alex from GenGAME gives a little insight into his first impression of the game. He had the chance to give it a try at E3, and was able to make some comments about the graphics, gameplay, and overall structure of the world.

Overall good impressions, but some hope for some unknowns when the game is finally released. Hit the jump for more!

First, I strongly encourage you to read the original article that Alex Plant published on GenGAME. Additionally, if you haven’t already, I suggest that you read the article he posted about his hands-on impressions from E3. He goes over more specifics of the game mechanics and what he was able to see in the E3 demo. In that article, he also posted a video which shows off the demo, which you can watch below:

A Link Between Worlds shares a lot of similarities with A Link to the Past. The map is nearly the same, the top-down perspective is familiar, and the way Link swings his sword horizontally in front of him. Though Nintendo left the sprite style of art for obvious reasons, the art style is still reminiscent of the third Zelda title.

Alex commented that in general A Link Between Worlds was easier than A Link to the Past because the enemy AI wasn’t as aggressive and Link moves and swings his sword faster. However, there are new challenges, such as a dedicated button to raise Link’s shield, instead of having it always up such as in the SNES days.

As it seems now to Alex, A Link Between Worlds feels more like a remake of it’s 16 bit predecessor. Much more of a true remake than Ocarina of Time 3D and The Wind Waker HD with the completely revamped graphics and new gameplay mechanics, but still a remake.

This is, however, okay with Alex and the other people that are looking at the game because of the numerous changes it makes. It’s still likely to have its own story, though there will similarities to A Link to the Past, but there are many unknowns about the game before it launches in November, and the surprise that Aonuma announced hopefully will be a fun addition to the game that we won’t expect. Whether or not A Link Between Worlds feels more like a sequel or a remake, it looks like it’ll be a fun addition to the franchise.
