I liked it. I don't care how they pronounced Aang or that some of the characters did not look like they did in the anime, which I did not even watch. I thought it was a fun film which I enjoyed. 7/10

The name pronunciation was changed to better fit the Chinese culture from which it is based. The pronunciation of "Aang" in the cartoon is an Americanized pronunciation.
The races of the four bending groups were altered to give some diversity to the planet. Earth and Fire benders were given darker skin because they lived closer to the planet's equator. Fire benders were based on middle-east people, Earthbending were based on east Asian and African people. This is also why the water tribes were based on western European people because living at the poles of a planet would naturally lead to lighter skin. In the cartoon series, basically everyone is the exact same race and there is no racial diversity. This was changed to provide more realism. An entire planet with no racial diversity is very unrealistic.
Aang's and Sokka's behaviors were changed because the goofball personality really doesn't work for a serious action/adventure movie. Not everything crosses mediums well.
And Kung Fu is one type of martial art, and only two of the bending forms use it, and each one different styles of Kung Fu. Earth Bending uses Hung Gar, a southern Chinese martial art style. Which is what they used in the movie. Firebending uses Northern Shaolin Kung Fu. Waterbending uses Tai Chi. Airbending uses Ba Gua Kung Fu.

The movie had very good reasons to make the changes they did. A lot of people that didn't like it, just didn't like the fact that there were changes. I am a fan of the series and I recognize the logic of the changes and I would have made the same changes myself if I were in charge of the movie.

I wouldn't have made the same changes had I been them -- plenty of them were arbitrary and there was no reason to ditch the show accuracy for plenty of them -- but I do agree that they had their reasons. Especially when it came to things like condensing scenes, characters, and sections of the plot to come down time, I can understand why.

It was definitely not a terrible movie. It had a lot of flaws, but they rested in things people don't complain about, like the acting or the poor bending effects (it looked like 99% of the bending could have been easily countered by punching the bender in the face; it was too slow and unimpressive). Katara in particular was a... terrible actor, and a poorly written character. She was easily the weakest part of the entire movie.

So it's got a lot of problems. It's just not as bad as everyone says it is and most of the reasons I hear are somewhat poor.

Its bad because of M. Night. End of story. The acting is wooden, the visual effects are not very good, it is cast badly (race nothing to do with it, and Zuko (Dev Patel) is probably the only redeeming member of the cast), which makes the characters weak and unlikable, the story structure is terrible, etc. etc. The reason it did so badly is not because of how it adapted the cartoon show, what changed, or the race issue. The reason it did so badly (and why it is bad) is simply because it was not made well. I think if it was made by another director who made similar "adaptation" decisions, it would have been fine, maybe even pretty good.

In a nutshell, only the core fans are complaining about the changes from the TV show. General audiences just didn't like the badly made movie.

And as a core fan, I actually understand/agree with many of the "adaptation" decisions.

That's actually not particularly compelling for everyone, especially considering I found every movie of his prior to The Last Airbender -- excluding The Village -- to be extremely enjoyable films. I've never felt they were poorly made or filled with poor acting.

You're right, its a sweeping general comment that doesn't apply to everyone. But it certainly applies to me, and many others (many an essay and opinion column I have read with similar feelings) but certainly not everyone. Arguably the majority, but I don't really have a way to prove that. I just have a very distinct memory of being in a full theatre on a Friday Night for on the second weekend of Inception when a preview for Devil came on. It was actually a pretty good trailer. But then the title card of "produced by M. Night Shyamalan" came up, and a very, very loud string of booing began. I don't believe I am in the minority among the general populace, and certainly not among the film community.

Critically however, it is quote obvious that he is the cause of what many consider to be the problems with the film, when making comparisons to his previous films. His "auteur" touch (to say Night is an auteur is a travesty, however) is very evident, in this one and others, and it is a touch of a paint stroke that makes me cringe.

I honestly had very high expectations. I love The Sixth Sense, and knowing Night was getting to crazy with all of his twists (The Happening, anyone?) He finally had a script that he couldn't mess with too much. He would just be a director, with the story written for him. Just a filmmaker. And he failed, and fell into an abyss that I didn't know it was possible to find. I also think it says something that it took him almost two years to get his next project off the ground, probably dealing with the fallout. They are also not making a sequel.

Yeah, I blame Night. And I know I am not alone. I think we should keep this thread on topic though, we can create a M. Night Shyamalan thread if you like, haha.

I am also surprised that you found The Village to be not enjoyable. For many (myself included), it was the only one besides The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable that was even watchable.

Did not like Signs, at all. And he didn't direct Devil, so it doesn't really apply to my argument about his filmmaking, just used it as an example of what I perceive to be public opinion.

In my opinion, it was awful. I'm not sure how they could even pronounce aang's name wrong when there was an entire series about him. I also thought that they could have picked better and more accurate actors to play the characters. And what i dont understand is how some parts of the movie didnt even go with the series, i mean come on,did they not watch the series before they made that movie -_-
When i saw the first trailer to it i was unbelievably excited and couldnt wait for it. but after seening it, i regreted wasting my money on that movie

I ws very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very disapointed with the Last Airbender movie. They could have done so much better with it. What they need to do is make a movie of Avatar:The Last Airbender, but make it a new story and make it an anime.

I really loved the movie, and like others I understand most of the changes, but not how sucky the bending was. I enjoyed every M. Night movie I have seen except for "The Happening" *shudders* I think he was trying to mock himself with that movie. I would love a "The Last Airbender Two" unless they make Toph black.
