I do really like this theory. It interests me, I like the idea of there being Sheikah among the everyday characters, and I have to say, that using this shade of purple could well be a hint from Nintendo, as could be the colour of his eyes. However, these things are too subtle, if Nintendo wanted us to think he was Sheikah, they would have given us something more. Which leads me to believe that either, they never wanted him to be considered Sheikah. Or, they did, but then they never took it further, could not think of any new context to put him in so they just forgot about their idea.

There is something else bugging me about this idea. You say that because he has the mask of truth this suggests he is Sheikah as it was handed down for Sheikah to Sheikah. This leads me to believe, that if the HMS were a Sheikah, there is no way he would entrust one of his tribe's greatest treasures to a small boy. The only reason he would, would be if he suspected that Link was in fact, in some point in the future, going to become a Sheikah.

You think that because Impa and Sheik are warriors that maybe they serious, and maybe HMS is maybe the runt of the Sheikah making him much more.... silly?

I say who cares if it IS looking to much into an 'insignificant character' ... wait, insignificant? He provides important help to Link in OoT... though i guess the mask game isn't technically required... but in MM he is, indirectly, the driving force of the whole story. He was meant to be creepy and mysterious and thus meant to inspire fan discussion and speculation... I wonder at someone who frequents Theory and Speculation Threads when they clearly will have no part of the ideas presented within... hm..

In any case I think the Mask Salesman is one of those characters we will never fully understand... Like Kaepora Gaebora we can't really know his true origins or motives unless a game is made which directly reveals such info....

(I searched, and I'm curious as to why I couldn't find a thread dedicated to this guy...)

Anywho, I just finished playing OoT recently, and I must say that HMS is one of my favorite characters. He's such a mystery.

I was also wondering if maybe, just maybe, he was a Sheikah? I mean, he wears the same shade of purple clothing that both Sheik and Impa (OoT) wear, which seems to me to be a Sheikah trademark of sorts, and he just so happens to possess the Mask of Truth. Whenever you talk about the Mask of Truth with HMS, he mentions that it is passed down by the Sheikah. How else would he come to possess such a sacred relic? Of course, I know Link gets it in his possession and he isn't Sheikah, but he doesn't really own it, HMS still owns it, Link is technically only borrowing/renting it.

So, what do you think of HMS? Should he come back in future games?
Do you think he's a Sheikah, too?
Your theory is interesting, but I do doubt it. Yes, he does wear purple, but you have to consider the tie between colors and design. The color purple is used for nobility, mystery, wisdom, and magic. These are found in both Zelda, Impa, and the Sheikah designs. It's more than likely that purple was used for the HMS's design because he is a mysterious and somewhat wise character.

The fact that he is in possession of the Mask of Truth isn't enough to support the theory that he is Sheikah. He is, afterall, a man of trade. If you were to use your logic, then you could also assume that he's of the same tribe that sealed away Majora and that he even met Mario. It's much more likely to assume that along his travels, he's been able to buy or win masks that people have passed down, bought, found or even stolen.

I think he could be a shiekah... the purple he wears is indeed worth mentioning, he does have the mask of truth and majoras mask also sports purple. It says in MM that a "tribe" worshiped the mask and the HMS says he went to great lengths to find it. However none of this is concrete. One other point to mention, while link is not considered sheikah the earring he wears is given to him by impa (a Shiekah) in the manga, therefore the mask of truth should be given to Link at some point of the game...

He is mysterious.. But I think he is a cool zelda character. I think whoever designed him must have been realy bored and just made him a bit randomly!
I think it is weird tho how he got those masks. I don't think he's a sheikah, good thinking because his clothes sort of resemble a sheikah. But only a little bit ;) !

The Happy Mask Salesman used to creep me out playing MM, when he changes his expression it's almost like he's putting on different masks, but let's take a look at his role in MM.
Link gets turned into a Deku Scrub.
The Happy Mask salesman is there to help.
He tells Link what he needs to do.
Eventually leading Link into saving termina.
Then he takes his leave, disapearing.
Not only that, but inside the moon there are little kids dancing around a tree that resemble younger versions of him, and they want to play mask salesman.
I think the Happy Mask salesman is the creator of Majora's Mask.
He must've lost it and that's why he worked so hard to get it. Then the skull kid stole it.
He obviously wouldn't want the evil power to be released so he found Link and sent him on a quest.
I believe in ancient times another person got the mask and the fierce diety was the one to defeat him.
Meaning the happy mask salesman would've noticed Link's resemblence to the fierce diety and thought he would be able to stop the Skull Kid.
Child like versions of him are inside the moon because he created the Mask.
And then afterwards, the Mask's power disapeared after Link defeated it.
With the evil power gone the happy mask salesman could rest in peace and disapeared. (Maybe he's lived for hundreds of years and is only alive to make sure the mask doesn't fall into evil hands)
This is just my theory of him though.
Oh and about the mask of truth and the shiekah, if he's lived for hundreds of years as a mask collector I could imagine he could get his hands on something like that after the Shiekah became near extinct.

Here is something how old is HMS? We don't know he could have been traveling for hundreds of years. In that time he could come across lots of masks with with power. Not just the mask of truth and Majora's Mask.
I believe that the HMS isn't Sheikah, but a hylian (or even something more), rather than a hyrulian as most others in those games are. This is because he seems to posses certain magical powers that only a hylian would have. For example, Zelda has indesputable magical powers that she has inherited from her race ( I would have included Links ability to use Magic but it is argueable that in these games he only has it because it was given to him by faries.). The ability to pass through dimensions is nothing to look down upon, and I also believe he has aditional powers if he was able to retrieve Majora's Mask (Unless he stole it from someone else). It is also significant that the owl guy from OoT and MM was once a sage and he still had an alternate persona in Termina. This could mean he is maore powerful than a sage and may be some sort of diety (which is what I personally think he is).

Can you please back up your kinda messed up theories with quotes.
Why do you think that he created the Majora's Mask, for example?
If you ACTUALLY played throught the game, in Ikana, more precisely in the Stone Tower Temple, there are tons of statues and carvings of Majora.
He/She/It was veneered and more than a simple mask.

The HMS creeps me out! He can travel between dimentions! He's weird smile that he has on during OoT makes me think that he is on some kind of drug! And he has a funny pig nose! They whole time that i worked with him in OoT i always thought that he would end up being an enemy, or he would hurt link or link's mission in some way. little did i know that he would play such a major role in MM

Don't get me started on this guy in MM. in MM the HMS lost his meds! He is scary and mean! He picks link up and shakes him, and the whole time i'm thinking 'CHILD ABUSE!'. SPOILER: In the end of MM after u have beaten the game, he's just kinda like 'thanks' and walks off! the HMS is one seriously creepy/mysterious dude! For me, he was not to be trusted.

Okay so....the fact that he posses the Mask of Truth [with the Sheikah symbol on it] does drive us to believe that he is one of them BUT think about, isn't that clan long lost? Its possessions could have scattered everywhere. Anyone could have come across these items and of course the Mask of Truth was bound to fall into his hands due to his ability to travel through dimensions and of course because of the pura magical nature of the mask. [He wants the best and most rare]
The Sheikah were never known to be able to travel through dimentions and in MM, I don't recall ever there being a single hint towards the race even exsisting there [unless I missed a spot]. All that together makes me believe he's not a Hylian, he's not a Sheikah but perhaps somehting more, maybe an unaned race.

I agree that it would probably be pretty easy for someone who can travel between dimensions, to acquire the mask of truth. I have two reasons to believe this:
1. In MM, the man in the first house of Skullwaltula has the Mask of Truth. There is no question that he is not Sheikah.
2. In OoT and MM, Link is able to find the Lens of Truth, which is also a Sheikah relic.

For these reasons, I think it is pretty clear that the Happy Mask Salesman isn't a Sheikah just because he found the Mask of Truth.

I don't think the HMS is a sheikah. He just got the mask somehow as well as he got the Majora's Mask.
