Now I know we're all familiar with Nintendo and their wide array of fun-loving and wacky titles, but I was sparked to make this thread after having spent my winter break revisiting some long forgotten games that have gathered dust over the years...I've finally been able to pick them up again and with some comical results. Many a year ago, my sister (not very knowledgeable in the video game department, but appreciative) got me Rayman Raving Rabbids on the main premises that it looked really silly. I left the game alone for quite some time until, a few days ago, I picked it up in curiosity. What it lacked in gameplay, it made up for in sheer hilarity. I was stitches for most of the game.. with completely absurd minigames and character designs, self-aware level names like "Bunnies Like to Copy Other Video Games", and even subtle and twisted references to classic paintings, that no youngster playing the game would get. It totally made my game experience.
Similarly, I felt the same about LoZ: Wind Waker, while I didn't entirely care for the story or style, the comedy (amongst other elements) kept me really engaged. A cracked a lot of smiles in that first playthrough... I also remember Animal Crossing being pretty amusing, and the oh so darkly humorous Earthworm Jim was unforgettable in that sense.
So, do any games stand out to you because of the comedic element? Not necessarily just little comic reliefs here and there, but games that kept it coming, and made it part of the game identity. Is it important for a game to have inherent comedy, or could you care less? Do you think some games try too hard? Do you have a preference for younger nostalgic humor, or the more mature and raunchy kind as seen in games like Conker's Bad Fur Day?
