Grading the years.

1996 - Very Good
1996 - Good
1998 - Amazing
1999 - Good
2000 - Decent
2001 - Amazing
2002 - Very Good
2003 - Good
2004 - Amazing
2005 - Very Good

Hanyou

didn't build that
I'll rank them.

1996: Super Mario 64 (this one's easy)
1997: Riven: The Sequel to Myst
1998: Ocarina of Time
1999: Harvest Moon 64
2000: Skies of Arcadia (also the year of Shenmue, so this is a close one)
2001: Tony Hawk 3
2002: Morrowind (another easy one!)
2003: The Wind Waker
2004: Tales of Symphonia
2005: The Minish Cap

I'm now remembering how disinterested I was in gaming in 2001, 2004, and 2005. The well was running pretty dry in those years. The rest of them, though, had several good games.

96: Super Mario 64

97: Diddy Kong Racing (Took what Mario Kart did and added an adventure mode.)

98: Pokemon Red/Blue and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (They both changed our lives by bringing Pokemon to the U.S. and showed us what a 3d Hyrule could look like)

99: Super Smash Bros. and Donkey Kong 64

00: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

01: Pokemon Crystal and Smash Bros. Melee

02: Animal Crossing and Kingdom Hearts

03: Mario Kart: Double Dash and Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire (The new mechanics introduced in both games were interesting and fun, they have also revolutionized competitive Pokemon as we know it today)

04: Katamari Damacy

05: The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap

Again these are all game I have played, so if I missed any goods games I may not have played them yet.

A lot of close calls here.

1996 - Mario 64 was a revolutionary game for 3D platformers but Pokemon did so much more as a game in my eyes. It basically invented a new IP and created an RPG adventure of such large scale.

1998 - Half-Life was sooo good. But Ocarina of Time had to come out in the same year.

2001 - A really competitive year. Halo broke so much ground in shooters. GTA III invented sandboxing. Melee was the Ali of fighting games. Final Fantasy X was a big game in the series.

2002 - So many options here. Eternal Darkness was really innovative with horror-adventure. Metroid Prime was amazing first person adventure. Wind Waker had great atmosphere. Kingdom Hearts was born.

2004 - San Andreas, Half-Life 2, World of Warcraft and Halo 2. Wow. Any one of these could have won. Depending on whether you're a PC gamer and whether you prefer open/linear games.
