Hello. I'm new here. I'm not used to using forum's. I hope to have a good time here :nod: I love the Zelda series, so I figured I'd check out the site, and it seem's like a cool place!

Onto my question. lol I was wondering: I noticed there's quite a bit of info on Goron's, Zora's and Hylian's/Terminian's, but their certainly isn't much info on Deku Scrubs, who happen to be my favorite race right next to Zora's.
Would anyone be so kind as to share how they believe Deku Scrub's are? Like, can they eat, or do they just need water like actual plant's? And what about gender differences? It's obvious their are gender's (seeing as there is a Princess, then there's the deku butler's son from MM)
And what about young? (This is one question that's left me with a headache trying to think about lol. I wasn't really curious until reading a thread called "A Study on Gorons and Goron Reproduction" by someone named Fierce (I believe was the name)). What are your thought's?

I guess they are an actual plant that can exit the ground. I bet they also every so often have to go back to the ground like we see them do in OoT. Also they do need water to drink and for gender I have no idea. And also I think they are grown like any plant really. Those are my ideas.

Before I start answering your questions, HylianWolfos, I would like to make a theory of mine clear. I believe that there originally were no Deku Scrubs in Hyrule, but there was a civilized group of them in the alternate dimension, Termina. The Terminian Deku Scrubs (who were the only Deku Scrubs at that point) found the portal to Hyrule, and that was how Deku Scrubs came to settle in Hyrule. This theory also explains why there are so many civilized Deku Scrubs in Termina, while the few Hyrulian Deku Scrubs seem rather wild.

Anyway, back on track! I do believe that Deku Scrubs can eat if they want to, but I don't think they need anything else but water and sunlight to survive. About their gender, I'm almost certain they have genders, I mean, plants have genders so I guess Deku Scrubs do as well. A new born Deku Scrub is most likely born out of the ground, similar to plants, and I think that a Deku Scrub spends most of it's life above ground, to get as much energy as possible.

Those are my thoughts on the Deku Scrub, and I think it's really interesting to theorize about this particular race, just because (as you mentioned earlier HylianWolfos) we don't know as much about them compared to other races in the Zelda franchise.

That's an interesting theory, Komali ^^ It's a good explanation as to why Hylian Deku's and Terminian Deku's are so different.

Ah, That's what I thought too. (About Deku Scrub's being able to eat)
And about Gender: Maybe one can tell through how their leave's look? *has no idea* lol I alway's imagine that female's would probably have bright color's on them at a certain age or so. (I've actually gone through the idea of that maybe Deku scrub's can bloom flower's on their leave's in certain season's, such as spring, and the color's determine the gender? Dark for male's, bright for females.)
New born Dekus: You're more than likely right. :nod: It'd make more sense that way, seeing as they're plant's.

I was surprised that not many people ask about Deku Scrub's. And I've really wanted to get a better look at how they possibly live their live's, and why they are the way they are. You really gave a good view on it, thank you.

First of all, welcome.

As per your post, it is interesting that little is known about the Deku Scrubs. There are fewer games in which you interact with them extensively, as compared to Gorons and Zoras, so this may be why they aren't as commonly discussed? As far as food, since they are plants, I would assume sunlight and water. But, then again, this is Hyrule, so maybe they work differently than how we think of plants.

Female Deku Scrubs are probably lighter in color than the males. As for flowers, from what I know they don't seem like they would bloom. Although, I think it would be cool if they did! And, I would imagine, as Komali said, that they would be born out of the ground. Perhaps when they spit out a Deku nut, it acts as a seed? I'm not sure how likely that one is, but that's the best that I can think of.

They seem pretty nomadic, as a race, traveling to various areas, and often selling Link items (especially noted in Ocarina and the Oracle series, where there is no Deku monarchy as in Majora's Mask).

I've never thought much about them, myself, so thanks for posting this topic!

Deku Scrubs are my second favorite race in Zelda. They are the most adorable creatures when they get mad in Majora's Mask.

Deku Guard: How many times do I have to tell you?! Only go through the throne room. Enjoy your stay!

The food thing still sort confuses me, seeing as they don't appear to have an actual mouth, but like you said ZeldaOcarina, this is Hyrule. I guess it's something we'll never know.

I've done some sketches of my two character's blooming flower's to see how it would look. lol
The deku nut is what I first thought too, I'm still exploring other possibilities though. I'll keep it in mind however.

I would love to see them return some day as they were in MM though, I miss Deku Scrub's. (Except Mad Scrub's, those thing's would kick my butt in OoT XD)

Deku Scrubs are a mysterious breed, in many games they appear they just want your business but for some reason shoot at you.

Anyway i think its possible that the deku scrubs were either wiped out(nearly) by hylians or the forest spirits ie. either the great deku tree or other spirits that protect hyrule. This assumption is only because kokiri don't appear in MM and neither do many hylians(hy;ians are a race hyrulians referes to people who live in hyrule as termernians refer to people who live in termernia, learnt that from zelda wiki).

Its also possible that deku scrubs were almost wiped out in the hylian civil war or some other previous bloodshed(hyrule is never peaceful in the long run)

unless Nintendo delve further into there history(which i hope they do) we may never know. Actually if SS delves into the sheikah i would say they are the most mysterious race in the zelda universe.

So from what i gathered on the gender for deku scrubs, since ive only seen one from majoras mask,
I belive the color of their wood would show if its either male or female being that in game, the deku princess has a brighter face than the other deku's, who have black around their eyes,
And also a female deku would try to make herself more feminine than other dekus by growing flowers,

But this is just a guess on my part, since i do not know much of the deku scrub lore and of any other female deku that has existed.
