@ Wolfang31
I agree with you - Link's persona just isn't right for a woman while Samus' awesomeness really fits with her gender. I don't know why, but a commando space girl is quite the character.
I don't think Link being a woman would really be wrong, but it would change some things in the franchise. Zelda would probably have to be a man, but story elements and gameplay wouldn't change that much (that's what I'm assuming, anyway).
@ Satsy
You're right, the original Metroid did not show Samus' gender until the end, and it certainly does help that Samus is a good-looking hero, but aren't all female protagonists "eye-candy"?
@ VanistasXII
It's true that gamers from the past wouldn't warm up to the idea of Link being a girl, but... how else would you explain Metroid's success (though Metroid wasn't as successful as Zelda or Mario...)?
@ February Eve
Actually, I really thought people would assume that if Link were a woman, Princess Zelda would have to fit the role of a man... and it'd be strange seeing a "mansel" in distress.
@ anzacur
I completely agree with you. There would really be no difference with Link being a female today, but back then, it did make a difference. Then again (as I stated before)... look at Metroid! A female character in 1986, and Samus became an instant classic. Female characters are rare...
@ badmuffins
Yes, but that was the first Metroid game. One of the reasons Metroid has such an important place in the gaming world is because it was one of the first games to feature a woman as the main protagonist.
Honestly, this never popped up in my brain before. Link will always be a man, but I wonder how the Zelda series would've went down if The Legend of Zelda's main protagonist was a woman? Nintendo has already experienced immense success with Metroid. We all love Samus' cool and silent commando...
